Chapter 14: Tanur Bhava Phala

Results of the First House – The Body, Mind, and Self

Having completed the survey of the twelve Ascendants, the text now begins the systematic study of the Bhavas (Houses). Naturally, it starts with the most vital: the Lagna or Tanur Bhava—the House of the Body.

The First House represents the physical frame, complexion, health, longevity, temperament, and the overall direction of life.
It is the “root” of the horoscope, the point from which all other houses derive meaning.

1. The Significance of Tanur Bhava

The Lagna is compared to the seed of a tree, determining the quality, vigor, and nature of the life that unfolds.

It governs:

  • Deha (Body): Form, height, weight, complexion, scars, health.

  • Mana (Mind): Temper, confidence, initiative, and attitude.

  • Ayus (Longevity): Strength of life-force and immunity.

  • Prārambha (Beginning): Early life conditions and overall vitality.

A strong Lagna or Lagna Lord enhances all areas of life, while a weakened Lagna diminishes them.

2. Results of Planets Occupying the First House

Below are the classical effects when each Graha rises in the Lagna at birth.

Sun (Sūrya) in the Lagna

  • Produces a hot and Pitta constitution.

  • Square build, scant or thinning hair, reddish eyes.

  • Brave, authoritative, impatient, dignified.

  • May suffer eye troubles or headaches.

  • In Aries (Exalted): Creates renowned leaders and powerful personalities.

Moon (Chandra) in the Lagna

  • Gives beauty, charm, and a soft appearance.

  • If Waxing (bright), the native is wealthy, happy, and well-liked.

  • If Waning, the mind may be unstable and the body weak.

  • Emotional, romantic, sensitive.

Mars (Kuja) in the Lagna

  • Reddish complexion, athletic body, hot temper.

  • Impulsive, courageous, competitive.

  • Likely to have head scars or injuries.

  • Prone to accidents or blood disorders.

  • May give shorter life unless benefics aspect Mars.

Mercury (Budha) in the Lagna

  • Youthful figure, sharp intellect, pleasant speech.

  • Skilled in mathematics, writing, and śāstras.

  • Long-lived, witty, adaptable.

  • One of the best placements for intelligence and charm.

Jupiter (Guru) in the Lagna

  • The great protector—removes laksha-dosha (100,000 afflictions).

  • Handsome, dignified, religious, and blessed with wisdom.

  • Enjoys long life, prosperity, good children, and societal respect.

  • A placement praised in all classical texts.

Venus (Śukra) in the Lagna

  • Attractive, artistic, sensual.

  • Beautiful eyes, soft skin, well-proportioned body.

  • Fond of music, luxury, romance, and beauty.

  • Brings comfort, wealth, and refined taste.

Saturn (Śani) in the Lagna

  • Tall but thin or bony; dry complexion; older appearance.

  • Slow, serious, melancholic, introverted.

  • Brings delays, struggles, or isolation early in life.

  • But: In Libra, Capricorn, or Aquarius, Saturn becomes powerful—capable of producing leaders of communities and masses.

Rāhu in the Lagna

  • Unconventional appearance or personality.

  • Sharp, cunning mind; strong desires; unpredictable fortunes.

  • Prone to mysterious or upper-body ailments.

  • May have interest in occult, poisons, or foreign cultures.

Ketu in the Lagna

  • Thin, spiritual, detached, unmaterialistic.

  • May feel disconnected from their own identity.

  • Sometimes harsh, critical, or ungrateful—but fundamentally inclined to mokṣa.

  • Gives intuition, mysticism, and psychic sensitivity.

3. Special Yogas Related to the First House

A. Āmala Yoga

A benefic (Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) in the 10th, Lagna, or 4th produces purity of heart, good reputation, and lasting prosperity.

B. Deha-Kaṣṭa Yoga (Affliction of the Body)

Occurs when:

  • the Lagna Lord is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th

  • and is joined or aspected by malefics

This causes weak constitution, chronic diseases, or early-life suffering.

C. Dīrghāyu Yoga (Long Life)

If:

  • Lagna Lord is strong (own sign, exalted, or in kendra),

  • and aspected by Jupiter,

the native attains a full span of life (100 years as per classics).

4. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

Dr. Pulippani highlights an essential principle:

“Directional strength (Dig Bala) shapes the expression of planets.”

  • Jupiter and Mercury are strongest in the East—that is, in the Lagna.
Their placement elevates wisdom, intellect, and moral clarity.

  • Saturn is weak in the East, gaining Dig Bala only in the 7th (West).
Thus Saturn in Lagna often creates early burdens unless in its own sign or exaltation.

He concludes:

“A powerful Lagna Lord outweighs the effects of planets occupying the Lagna.”

Summary of Chapter 14

  • The 1st House governs body, mind, vitality, and life-direction.

  • Most Beneficial in Lagna: Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Waxing Moon.

  • Most Challenging in Lagna: Saturn (delay), Mars (injury), Rāhu/Ketu (instability).

  • Golden Rule:
A strong Lagna Lord protects the entire life, even if the Lagna itself holds difficult planets.
