Chapter 15: Dhana Bhava Phala
Results of the Second House – Wealth, Speech, Family & Sustenance
The Second House (Dhana Bhava) represents the substance that sustains life—wealth, food, family, and speech. As the house immediately following the Lagna, it reveals the native’s early environment, capacity to accumulate assets, and quality of their moral and material foundation.
It is also known as:
-
Netra Sthāna: House of the Right Eye
-
Vāk Sthāna: House of Speech
-
Kutumba Sthāna: House of Family
1. The Significance of Dhana Bhava
The author outlines five principal areas governed by the Second House:
A. Wealth (Dhana)
Represents accumulated assets—gold, cash, gems, movable wealth—not regular income (ruled by the 11th house).
B. Speech (Vāk)
Determines whether the native is truthful, eloquent, persuasive, harsh, or deceptive.
C. Family (Kutumba)
Represents the family one is born into and the early family atmosphere. Harmony or conflict in the household is seen here.
D. Food (Bhojana)
Eating habits, taste, cravings, and dietary tendencies.
E. Face & Vision
Governs the face, nose, teeth, and right eye.
A strong 2nd house gives prosperity, sweet speech, intelligence, a noble family atmosphere, and good diet. A weak or afflicted 2nd house disturbs all these.

3. Important Wealth Yogas
A. Mahā Dhana Yoga
Occurs when:
-
2nd Lord is in the 11th, and
-
11th Lord is in the 2nd,
creating a mutual exchange (Parivartana) or powerful linkage between savings and income.
B. Yukta Yoga
If the Lord of the 2nd is joined with benefics (Guru, Śukra, Mercury) in Kendras (1,4,7,10) or Trikonas (5,9), abundant prosperity is assured.
C. Daridra Yoga (Poverty)
If the 2nd Lord is in the 12th, 6th, or afflicted by malefics, the native struggles to retain wealth even if income is good.
4. The Maraka Principle of the Second House
The author gives a grave note of caution:
“The Second House is a Maraka Sthāna.”
Because it is the 12th from the house of longevity (3rd), it can inflict death or severe disease during its Dasa or Antardasa if the lord is afflicted.
-
Saturn + 2nd Lord = danger
-
Mars + 2nd Lord = violent disease
-
Rāhu/Ketu aspecting 2nd Lord = sudden health risk
This principle is essential in determining lifespan in advanced Jyotiṣa.
5. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)
Dr. Pulippani explains the subtlety of speech (Vāk):
Mercury → Diplomatic, pleasant speech
Mars → Sharp, aggressive speech
Saturn → Lying, harsh, or withdrawn speech
He adds:
“If the 2nd house is afflicted, the native should avoid tamasic foods—meat, alcohol, stale food—as they worsen speech, family quarrels, and mental impurities.”
