Chapter 16: Sahaja Bhava Phala

Results of the Third House – Courage, Siblings & Effort

The Third HouseSahaja Bhava—signifies what one is “born with”: siblings, courage, initiative, communication, and short journeys. It is also known as Vikrama Bhava, the House of Valor, reflecting the native’s willpower and personal effort (Purushārtha).

This is one of the Upachaya (growth-producing) houses, meaning that planets here often improve over time and give strength to overcome obstacles.

1. The Significance of Sahaja Bhava

Classical texts enumerate the following domains:

A. Younger Siblings

The 3rd house rules younger brothers and sisters, their well-being, and the native’s relationship with them.

B. Courage & Initiative (Vikrama)

Determines boldness, capacity for hard work, self-effort, adventure, and stamina.

C. Communication

Governs voice, writing skills, throat, hands, hearing, and artistic expression.

D. Short Travels

Frequent trips, local journeys, and movements within familiar surroundings.

E. Secondary Longevity

As the 8th from the 8th, it influences health, life endurance, and recovery from diseases.

2. Results of Planets in the Third House

As an Upachaya house, malefics do exceptionally well here, giving strength, daring, and the ability to overcome adversaries. Benefics, while gentle, may weaken courage unless otherwise strengthened.

  • May suffer ear-related troubles or nervous tension.

  • Detached from siblings; prefers solitude.

  • Intuitive, philosophical, and inwardly brave.

3. Determining the Number of Siblings (Bhrātṛ Saṅkhyā)

Classical rules include:

A. Gender Indicators

  • Masculine planets (Sun, Mars, Jupiter) → more brothers

  • Feminine planets (Moon, Venus) → more sisters

B. Strength of the 3rd Lord

The number of navāṁśas traversed by the 3rd Lord can hint at the number of siblings.

C. Benefic Influence

Benefics strengthen the sibling count; malefics reduce it.

4. Loss or Trouble to Siblings (Bhrātṛ Nāśa)

Certain combinations threaten siblings:

Papākhyā Yoga

Malefics in the 3rd house and a weak 3rd Lord → loss or suffering of siblings.

Mars in the 3rd

Most classical texts agree:

  • Mars gives courage

  • But harms siblings—unless exalted or in own sign.

5. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

Dr. Pulippani elaborates on Karako Bhava Nāśti:

“Mars is the natural significator for siblings. When it sits in the 3rd house, the energy becomes excessive—giving immense courage but burning the happiness from siblings.”

He adds:

“If Mars occupies Aries, Scorpio, or Capricorn, this destruction is neutralised—siblings are protected, and the native becomes a true hero.”
