Results of the Fourth House – Mother, Home, Happiness & Inner Peace

The Fourth HouseMātṛ Bhava—is the foundation of one’s emotional life. Located at the nadir of the horoscope (Pātāla / I.C.), it represents everything “beneath the surface”: the home, the heart, the mother, and the sources of deep comfort or sorrow.

It is the reservoir of Sukha (happiness), mental peace, and inner stability.


1. The Significance of Mātṛ Bhava

Classical texts assign the following domains to the Fourth House:

A. The Mother (Mātṛ)

The health, longevity, and emotional bond with the mother.

B. Education (Vidya)

Formal schooling, academic qualifications, intelligence-in-application.

C. Vehicles (Vāhana)

In classical terms: horses, elephants, chariots.
In modern terms: cars, motorbikes, luxury vehicles, airplanes, etc.

D. Property & Real Estate (Gṛha / Bhūmi)

Houses, lands, agriculture, buildings, domestic comforts.

E. Emotional Happiness (Sukha)

Mental peace, contentment, security, satisfaction, and inner harmony.

This house forms the “private sphere” of life, setting the tone of one’s childhood, education, and home environment.


2. Results of Planets in the Fourth House

The planets occupying this house strongly influence the mind, home, property, and relationship with the mother.


Sun (Sūrya) in the 4th House – The Disturbed Heart

  • Creates internal restlessness, anxiety, or a proud temperament.

  • Relationship with mother may be strained, distant, or formal.

  • Gains in politics, government, or property—but peace is lacking.

  • Possible heart or chest issues due to Pitta imbalance.


Moon (Chandra) in the 4th House – The Nurturer (Dig Bala – Directional Strength)

  • Moon is strongest in the Fourth House.

  • Deep emotional bond with mother; maternal blessings are abundant.

  • Gains in vehicles, homes, comforts, and social popularity.

  • Soft-hearted, compassionate, artistic, and emotionally satisfied.


Mars (Kuja) in the 4th House – The Landlord

  • Creates domestic quarrels and friction with mother (Kuja Doṣa).

  • But as the significator of land, Mars gives huge landed wealth, property, and real estate success.

  • Strong willpower and capacity for physical work.

  • Mechanical or engineering skills.


Mercury (Budha) in the 4th House – The Scholar

  • Educated, intelligent, witty, and fond of books or libraries.

  • Enjoys friendships and harmonious domestic surroundings.

  • Excellent for academic success, writing, paperwork, and analysis.


Jupiter (Guru) in the 4th House – The Noble Soul

  • Blessings from the mother; peaceful and prosperous home.

  • Spiritual inclination and philosophical mind.

  • Respected household, large homes, or ancestral property.

  • Strong ethical foundation and devotion to parents.


Venus (Śukra) in the 4th House – The Aristocrat

  • Luxurious homes, beautiful décor, and artistic surroundings.

  • Gains luxury vehicles (Vāhana Yoga).

  • Close bond with mother; love for music, perfumes, comfort, and beauty.

  • Emotional satisfaction through family and aesthetics.


Saturn (Śani) in the 4th House – The Recluse

  • Early hardships in home life; sadness or separation from mother.

  • Lives in old, remote, or gloomy environments.

  • Mind is melancholic or burdened with responsibility.

  • Education may be delayed or interrupted.


Rāhu in the 4th House – The Foreigner

  • Unconventional domestic life; chaotic or unpredictable household.

  • May live in a foreign country or a home belonging to others.

  • Sudden changes in property, vehicles, or residence.

  • Strong desire for luxury without true peace.


Ketu in the 4th House – The Renunciate

  • Detachment from home or mother; spiritual or monastic tendencies.

  • Interruptions in education, property, or emotional stability.

  • Prefers solitude, meditation, or secluded environments.

Mother’s Condition

“If both the 4th House and the Moon are afflicted—especially by Saturn or Rāhu—the loss or suffering of the mother becomes certain.”

This rule is unanimously accepted in classical Jyotiṣa.
