Chapter 2 : The Astronomical Reality of Rahu and Ketu

Before we explore the role of Rahu and Ketu in predictive astrology, it is vital to understand what these points actually are. While mythology offers symbolic explanations (the story of the serpent), we must also examine their true nature through the lens of astronomy.

The Astronomical Explanation

Various beliefs exist regarding the physical location of Rahu and Ketu. Some suggest they are connected to the Earth’s geographical poles, while others link them to the light and dark sides of the Moon.

However, the most scientifically accurate explanation is this:

  • The Earth moves around the Sun in an elliptical path called the Ecliptic.
  • The Moon revolves around the Earth in a separate elliptical path.

These two paths are not on the same plane; they intersect at an angle of about 5°. The two points where these orbits cross—lying exactly 180° apart—are the Moon’s nodes.

Rahu (North Node) Also called the Ascending Node. This is the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic moving from South to North.
Ketu (South Node) Also called the Descending Node. This is the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic moving from North to South.

Because they are always 180° apart, Rahu and Ketu will always occupy opposite houses in your horoscope.

Why are they called "Shadowy Planets"?

Although treated as planets in Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu have no physical mass. They are mathematical points. They are termed "Shadowy Planets" (Chhaya Graha) because they are directly responsible for the shadows we see during eclipses.

1. Lunar Eclipse

Occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon. This happens only on a Full Moon when both luminaries are close to the nodes.

2. Solar Eclipse

Occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and Earth, covering the solar disc. This happens only on a New Moon when the Sun and Moon are conjunct near a node.

Do Mathematical Points Really Influence Life?

Critics often argue: "How can a mathematical point with no physical body influence human life?" This argument holds little ground when we consider the following realities:

1. Non-Physical Forces Exist

We accept the influence of gravity, magnetic fields, Prana, and thought energy. These are not "material" objects, yet they profoundly affect the physical world and the human body.

2. Subtle Planes of Existence

Vedic philosophy explains that existence is not limited to the physical. Powerful forces operate on the Astral and Causal planes. Rahu and Ketu act as gateways for these subtle energies to enter our physical experience.

3. The Science of Energy Vortexes

The nodes are not just empty space. They are the precise points where the magnetic and cosmic fields of the Earth, Sun, and Moon interact most intensely. This makes them powerful energy vortexes capable of generating astrological influence—just as effectively as a physical planet.
