Chapter 20: Kalatra & Kāma Bhava Phala

The Seventh House: Spouse, Desire & Destiny

The Seventh House marks the realm of The Other.
Standing directly opposite the Ascendant, it governs those who enter our life through union—whether marital, contractual, or confrontational. It is the domain of spouse, desire, partnerships, foreign travel, and also one of the most feared positions in astrology: the Maraka Sthana, the house capable of ending life.

1. The Significance of the Seventh House

The text outlines the broad influence of Kalatra Bhava:

A. Marriage (Vivāha)

The nature, health, temperament, and destiny of the spouse.
Quality of married life and harmony after marriage.

B. Desire (Kāma)

Sexual passion, sensuality, moral conduct, and emotional cravings.

C. Partnerships

Business alliances, contracts, and professional agreements.

D. Opponents

Enemies who confront the native openly (unlike the hidden enemies of the 6th House).

E. Foreign Travel

The farthest point from the Ascendant—indicating residence or long stays in foreign lands.

F. Maraka Influence

Being the 12th from the 8th House of Life, the 7th can trigger illness, accidents, or death during certain planetary periods.

2. Results of Planets in the Seventh House

The planets placed here mould the spouse and the marriage.
Below are the classical results described by the author:

Sun in the 7th House — The Egoist’s Marriage

The spouse may be proud, authoritative, or dominating.
Friction, humiliation, or power struggles are common.
Marriage may be delayed, but the partner often comes from a respected family.

Moon in the 7th House — The Romantic Union

A beautiful, gentle, affectionate spouse.
Strong Moon: Harmony, pleasure, travel, emotional warmth.
Weak Moon: Illness, moodiness, instability in marriage.
The native is deeply romantic.

Mars in the 7th House — The Manglik Fire

This is one of the most challenging positions (Kuja Dosha).
Indicates quarrels, aggression, domestic violence, or early loss of spouse unless matched correctly.
The partner is energetic but hot-tempered.

Mercury in the 7th House — The Intelligent Companion

The spouse is witty, youthful, educated, and business-minded.
Marriage begins as friendship.
If afflicted, Mercury may cause impotence or lack of sexual appetite.

Jupiter in the 7th House — The Virtuous Spouse

A chaste, religious, wise, and supportive partner.
Marriage brings good fortune, prestige, and prosperity.
However, such natives may become spiritual, reducing passion in married life.

Venus in the 7th House — The Lover (Karako Bhava Nāśti)

Venus gives beauty, charm, and artistic taste to the spouse.
But being the natural significator of marriage, it can cause
excessive sensuality, romantic dissatisfaction, or extra-marital tendencies.
Marital harmony becomes fragile.

Saturn in the 7th House — The Delayed but Steady Bond

Marriage is delayed, often after 30.
The spouse is mature, hardworking, older or serious in nature.
Though the marriage may lack warmth, it is stable, enduring, and karmically bound.

Rahu in the 7th House — The Unconventional Partner

Marriage to someone from a different caste, culture, or foreign land.
Relationships may be turbulent, filled with suspicion, addiction, or deceit.
Separation or widowhood is possible.

Ketu in the 7th House — The Detached Union

The spouse may be spiritual, indifferent, or weak in health.
There is emotional distance or lack of intimacy.
The native may feel “disconnected” in marriage.

3. Kuja Dosha (Mars Defect)

A Central Doctrine of Marriage Astrology

The text emphasizes Mars in the 7th more than in any other house.

The Rule

Mars in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th causes Kuja Dosha.
Its most intense expression is in the 7th House.

The Effect

Mars injects fire into relationships:

  • Anger

  • Ego

  • Violence

  • Impulsivity

  • Restlessness

  • Sexual incompatibility

Cancellation (Dosha Bhanga)

The negative effects are neutralized if:

  • Mars occupies own sign (Aries or Scorpio), or

  • Mars is Exalted (Capricorn), or

  • Mars is aspected by a Benefic (Jupiter, Venus).

4. The Maraka (Death-Inflicting) Power

As the 12th from the 8th, the 7th House functions as a Maraka.

Warning

If the 7th Lord is:

  • Weak

  • Afflicted

  • Conjoined malefics

  • Placed in Dusthana houses

then during its Dasa, severe illness or death may occur—but only when the native’s lifespan (Ayur Daya) is nearing completion.

5. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

“Karako Bhava Nāśti is crucial here.”
The Karaka of marriage is Venus. When Venus sits in the 7th House (its own domain), it amplifies desire to unhealthy levels. Excess destroys harmony. Hence Venus in the 7th—while producing beauty and attraction—may paradoxically ruin the marriage.

Dr. Pulippani adds:

  • Marriage charts must always be matched to neutralize Mars, Rahu, or Venus afflictions.

  • Compatibility is the only true remedy for the 7th House’s dangers.
