Chapter 23: Karma & Rājya Bhava Phala
The Tenth House: Profession, Authority & Public Glory
The Tenth House, known as Karma Bhava or Rājya Sthāna, is the highest point in the horoscope—the zenith where destiny becomes visible to the world. It reveals the native’s profession, status, authority, and public legacy.
Just as the Sun reaches its maximum brilliance at noon, planets placed in the 10th house shine with maximum karma shakti.
1. The Significance of Karma Bhava
The ancient text assigns the following domains to the Tenth House:
A. Profession (Jīvana)
The nature of one’s career, daily work, and achievements.
B. Authority & Leadership (Rājya)
Positions of command, government favor, administration, and the ability to rule.
C. Honor & Fame (Kīrti)
Public reputation, awards, name, and societal recognition.
D. Actions & Dharma (Karma)
Rituals, charity, duty, and social responsibilities—including the work that shapes one’s legacy.
E. Body Part
The knees, symbolizing responsibility and the weight one must carry.
A strong 10th house elevates even a weak horoscope. A weak 10th house can cripple the promise of an otherwise strong chart.
2. Results of Planets in the Tenth House
Planets placed here act publicly—their strengths and flaws are visible to the world. They shape the native’s profession, achievements, and societal contribution.
| Planet in 10th House | Results as described in the classical text |
|---|---|
| Sun | The King. Gains Digbala (full directional strength). The native becomes powerful, authoritative, respected by government, and successful in royal or executive duties. Fame and wealth come naturally. |
| Moon | The Public Personality. Career involves public interaction, travel, liquids, hospitality, or marine/transport fields. Fluctuations are common. A bright Moon grants great popularity. |
| Mars | The Commander. Also gains Digbala. Indicates success in police, military, surgery, engineering, or fire-related professions. The native is bold, decisive, and feared by subordinates. |
| Mercury | The Professional. Skilled in business, writing, commerce, accounting, journalism, or astrology. The native becomes known for intellect, communication, and diplomacy. |
| Jupiter | The Minister. The person becomes a judge, advisor, priest, professor, or spiritual authority. They achieve lasting fame and honor, and their deeds are remembered. |
| Venus | The Artist. Success in cinema, arts, music, luxury goods, design, fashion, or hospitality. Gains wealth and popularity, especially among the opposite sex. |
| Saturn | The Administrator of Masses. Represents labor, agriculture, mining, engineering, heavy industries, or judiciary. Career builds slowly but becomes rock-solid and enduring. Excellent for magistrates or judges. |
| Rahu | The Politician. Extremely ambitious—rises through unconventional, foreign, or political means. Able to manipulate public opinion. Success in multinational companies or mass politics. |
| Ketu | The Renunciate Worker. Career may be unconventional, spiritual, or unstable. The native may abandon powerful positions for solitude or mystical pursuits. |
3. Yogas for Career, Power & Reputation
A. Amala Yoga
Formed when a natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury) occupies the 10th house from Lagna or Moon.
Result: Spotless reputation, philanthropy, enduring fame.
B. Dharma–Karmādhipati Yoga
Occurs when:
-
the 9th Lord (Dharma) and
-
the 10th Lord (Karma)
are joined or mutually aspect each other.
Result:
One of the greatest Rāja Yogas—makes the person:
-
a king, statesman, IAS officer, influential leader, or head of institutions.
This yoga unites good fortune (9th) with action (10th), producing destiny-shaping power.
C. Sannyāsa Yoga
If four or more planets gather in the 10th House:
-
If the 10th lord is strong → renown as a spiritual master or world teacher.
-
If the 10th lord is weak → downfall of profession, wandering life, or renunciation.
4. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)
“When timing career, do not judge only from the Lagna.
The 10th from the Moon is equally important.
The Lagna shows actual karma.
The Moon shows mental inclination and the type of work one enjoys.”
He also adds:
-
Saturn in the 10th, though feared by many, is excellent for judiciary, administration, and public service.
-
Rahu in the 10th is common in successful politicians as it grants mass influence.
