Chapter 27: Dvi-Graha Yoga Adhyaya

The Results of Two-Planet Conjunctions

After understanding Aspects (Drishti), the text now moves to Conjunctions (Yuti)—the fusion of two planetary energies in a single sign.
A conjunction can create brilliance or chaos depending on the nature of the planets involved.

When two planets share a house, their energies merge, collide, or mutually amplify. This blending forms a new “compound” energy that often dominates the entire chart.

1. The Significance of Conjunctions

The author explains that:

The stronger planet in a conjunction dominates the weaker one.

This dominance may be due to:

  • Sign placement

  • Degrees (closer degree = stronger influence)

  • Natural friendship

  • Directional strength

  • Combustion

Types of unions:

  • Mitra Yuti — Friendly planets (Sun + Jupiter) → constructive and harmonious

  • Shatru Yuti — Enemy planets (Sun + Saturn) → internal conflict

  • Graha Yuddha — Planetary war (very close conjunction) → the weaker planet becomes ineffective

2. Sun Conjunctions (Surya Yuti)

The Sun is the king. Any planet joining the Sun risks becoming Combust (Astangata), losing physical strength—unless sufficiently far (6°–10° away).

Combination Nature / Classical Name Key Results
Sun + Moon Amavasya Yoga Skilled in machinery/metals; internally conflicted; emotions subdued; may depend on women. Strong in Aries/Leo.
Sun + Mars Angaraka Yoga Fiery temperament, courage, high drive. Prone to injuries, inflammatory diseases, and accidents. Excellent for army/police.
Sun + Mercury Budha–Aditya Yoga One of the most auspicious yogas. Sharp intellect, eloquence, wealth, fame. Best in Aries, Gemini, Leo, Virgo.
Sun + Jupiter Guru–Saurabha Righteous, honorable, wise. Ministerial or advisory positions. Strong dharma.
Sun + Venus Artistic talent, love for drama, weapons, and beauty; weak eyesight; marital troubles due to Venus’ combustion.
Sun + Saturn Pitr Dosha Poverty or struggle in early life; conflict with father/government; rigid personality; karmic burdens.

3. Moon Conjunctions (Chandra Yuti)

The Moon absorbs and reflects the qualities of the planet it joins.

Combination Nature / Classical Name Key Results
Moon + Mars Chandra–Mangala Wealth through business, but sometimes from questionable means. Restlessness, mother-related stress.
Moon + Mercury Vidya Yoga Poetic, charming, intelligent; sweet speech; fond of learning; mentally balanced.
Moon + Jupiter Gaja–Kesari Yoga One of the best yogas: fame, wealth, leadership, divine grace; destroys enemies.
Moon + Venus Romantic Yoga Artistic talent, beauty, love for luxury and comfort; fond of perfumes, clothes, liquids.
Moon + Saturn Punarphoo Dosha Emotional heaviness, depression, delayed marriage, difficult childhood, raised by elders or relatives.
Moon + Rahu Chandra–Rahu Grahan Clouded mind, phobias, hallucinations, sudden mood swings, psychic sensitivity.

4. Other Key Two-Planet Yogas

These powerful pairings are mentioned in the classical text:

Mars + Jupiter

Bravery + Wisdom

  • Leader of armies or towns

  • Skilled in mathematics, strategy, and weapons

  • Courageous and ambitious

Mars + Saturn — Agni-Maruta Yoga (Fire + Wind)

A highly volatile combination.

  • Quarrelsome, rebellious, revolutionary

  • Accidents, fractures, surgeries

  • Struggles with joints or rheumatic pain

Jupiter + Saturn — Dharma–Karma Yoga

One of the most powerful leadership yogas.

  • Stability combined with expansion

  • Good for administrators, judges, community leaders

  • Wealth through persistent effort

Venus + Saturn

  • Artistic talent combined with discipline

  • Success in sculpture, painting, antique business

  • Reserved, serious, deep romantic life

5. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

Dr. Pulippani highlights a key predictive principle:

Orb of Influence (Degree Difference)

  • A conjunction is strongest within 12 degrees.

  • The closer the planets, the stronger the effect.

  • Combustion:

    • A planet within 5° of the Sun loses physical strength.

    • Example:

      • Mercury at 2° from Sun → brilliant intellect but nervous temperament

      • Venus near Sun → passion rises but marital harmony suffers

“A conjunction is not merely two planets sitting together; it is a melding of their auras.
The tighter the conjunction, the more dramatic the effect.”

Summary of Chapter 27

  • Sun + Mercury → Best for intellect

  • Moon + Jupiter → Best for fame, virtue, prosperity

  • Sun + Saturn → Conflict & karmic struggle

  • Moon + Saturn → Emotional heaviness

  • Mars + Saturn → Accidents & conflict

  • Jupiter + Saturn → Stable leadership

Core Rule:

The Sun burns. The Moon reflects. Mars agitates. Jupiter uplifts. Saturn restricts.
The nature of the conjunction depends on which one dominates.
