Chapter 28: Tri-Graha Yoga Adhyaya

Results of Three-Planet Conjunctions)

After the study of two-planet conjunctions (Dvi-Graha Yoga), the text now moves to the more complex realm of three-planet unions, called Tri-Graha Yoga.
When three planetary forces occupy a single sign, their combined energy creates powerful (and often unpredictable) results. Interpretation requires refined judgment, as the results depend on:

  • Nature of each planet

  • Mutual friendship

  • Degrees (distance between planets)

  • Dignity (own house, exaltation, debility)

  • Strength of the sign lord

General Principle:

When three planets join, the “majority nature” dominates.
If two are benefics and one is malefic, benefic results prevail but with a blemish.
If two are malefics and one is benefic, the native struggles despite some relief.

1. Prominent Three-Planet Conjunctions

The classical text lists several impactful combinations. Their results are summarized below:

Combination Nature Results According to the Text
Sun + Moon + Mars The Warrior Brave, bold, aggressive. Wealthy but restless. Conflicts with parents. Prone to injury, surgery, or blood-related issues.
Sun + Moon + Mercury The Scholar Intelligent, artistic, business-savvy. Skilled in writing or mathematics. Eyesight issues or fluctuating fortunes possible.
Sun + Moon + Jupiter The Priest / Noble One Highly auspicious. Wise, wealthy, respected by rulers. Stable marriage and virtuous life. Strong moral compass.
Sun + Moon + Saturn The Laborer / Sufferer Poverty or setbacks, especially in childhood. Mental heaviness. Poor parental relations. Servitude or low social standing early in life.
Sun + Mercury + Venus The Aristocrat Extremely common and generally excellent. Refinement, wealth, charm, eloquence. Success in trade, arts, or administration. (If Venus/Mercury are combust, artistic and marital troubles appear.)
Sun + Mars + Saturn The Revolutionary Three malefics together. Fierce, impulsive, accident-prone. Prone to violence, legal trouble, or severe hardships. Life marked by struggle.
Mars + Jupiter + Saturn The Leader Strategic leader—mix of courage (Mars), wisdom (Jupiter), and discipline (Saturn). Head of communities, towns, or armed forces.
Moon + Mercury + Jupiter The Wise One Highly auspicious. Scriptural knowledge, fame, charity, sweet speech. Gains wealth through intellect and divine merit.
Venus + Jupiter + Saturn The Wealth Holder Honor, wealth, stable family life. Gains through tradition, elders, or long-term effort. Longevity and respect in society.

2. Rule of Dominance (Mukhya Graha Nyaya)

To interpret a three-planet conjunction:

Step 1 — Identify the most powerful planet

The strongest planet (by dignity, degrees, or Shadbala) takes leadership of the group.
Examples:

  • If Sun is exalted in the trio → solar qualities dominate (authority, ego, leadership).

  • If Saturn is debilitated in the trio → Saturn’s harmful nature is weakened or nullified.

Step 2 — Check if planets are actually close

Conjunction is strongest when planets are within 10°–12°
A trio spread across 20°–25° behaves like three separate single-planet placements.

Step 3 — The Sandwich Rule (Papa Kartari Effect)

If a benefic is positioned between two malefics (e.g., Saturn – Jupiter – Mars):

  • The benefic is “cut off”

  • Loses its power to bless

  • Cannot protect the sign

This creates psychological stress or external hardship.

3. Sannyasa (Renunciation) Patterns

Classical texts highlight an important principle:

4+ planets in a single house → Pravrajya Yoga

If four or more planets congregate in:

  • 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house (Kendras)

  • And the strongest among them is Saturn, Jupiter, or Ketu

Then the native may renounce worldly life or take to spiritual leadership.

This is rare but powerful and seen in charts of saints and monks.

4. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

“Modern charts frequently show three planets in one sign (especially Sun–Mercury–Venus).
Do not assume a powerful yoga unless the degrees support the conjunction.”

He emphasizes:

Degree Closeness Example

  • Sun → 2°

  • Venus → 15°

  • Mercury → 28°

Even though all three are in the same sign:

  • Sun + Venus → weak influence (13° apart)

  • Sun + Mercury → no yoga (26° apart)

  • Venus + Mercury → moderate (13° apart)

Thus, no true Tri-Graha Yoga is formed here.

Summary of Chapter 28

  • Best Combination:
Sun + Mercury + Venus → intellect, charm, wealth

  • Most Dangerous Combination:
Sun + Mars + Saturn → conflict, aggression, suffering

  • Golden Rule:
Always check planetary friendship, dignity, and degree closeness before judging any three-planet conjunction.
