Chapter 3: Graha Svarūpa Adhyāya

The Nature and Characteristics of the Nine Planets

Having examined the rāśis—the “field” in which karma unfolds—we now turn to the grahas, the dynamic forces that activate and manifest results within those fields. If rāśis are the soil, grahas are the seeds that determine what will grow.

In Vedic astrology, the term graha means “one that seizes or influences.” These nine celestial entities shape the destiny, temperament, physical form, and experiences of every individual.

1. The Navagrahas and Their Natural Nature

The text first classifies the nine planets (Navagrahas) according to their inherent benefic or malefic tendencies. This classification forms the bedrock of predictive astrology.

A. Natural Benefics (Śubha Grahas)

These planets incline toward harmony, prosperity, support, and growth.

  • Guru (Jupiter) – The greatest natural benefic; giver of wisdom, virtue, and fortune.

  • Śukra (Venus) – Bringer of comfort, beauty, relationships, and artistic refinement.

  • Candra (Moon) – Benefic when waxing; associated with nourishment, emotion, and softness.

  • Budha (Mercury) – Benefic when not associated with malefics; rules intellect, speech, and trade.

B. Natural Malefics (Pāpa Grahas)

These planets push the native through challenges, discipline, delay, or hardship—often essential for spiritual growth.

  • Śani (Saturn) – The greatest natural malefic; signifies karma, delay, sorrow, discipline.

  • Kuja (Mars) – Fire, aggression, injury, courage, and competition.

  • Ravi (Sun) – Mild malefic; represents heat, authority, ego, and vitality.

  • Rahu & Ketu – The shadow planets; amplifiers of obsession, confusion, sudden change, and moksha.

The author emphasizes that these are natural natures and do not determine whether a planet is good or bad for a specific chart. Functional roles are determined by house rulership, not by inherent nature.

2. Physical Characteristics of the Planets

The ancient sages assigned each graha a particular physiognomy, which astrologers use to infer physical appearance—especially by identifying the strongest planet (ātmakāraka, lagna lord, or dominant graha) in a chart.

Planet Traditional Physical Description
Sun (Ravi) Square-built body, honey-colored eyes, scanty hair, bilious temperament (Pitta).
Moon (Chandra) Round face and body, beautiful expressive eyes, sweet speech; Vāta-Kapha nature.
Mars (Kuja) Reddish eyes, thin waist, restless mind, fiery glow, youthful appearance; Pitta nature.
Mercury (Budha) Attractive physique, witty, fond of jokes; balanced temperament (Tri-doṣa).
Jupiter (Guru) Large body and belly, golden complexion or eyes, dignified bearing; Kapha nature.
Venus (Śukra) Charming, with curly hair, pleasant speech, artistic; Kapha-Vāta mixture.
Saturn (Śani) Tall, thin, dark, with stiff hair, prominent veins, lameness or slow gait; strong Vāta.

These planetary descriptions help shape accurate physical predictions.

3. Varṇa, Profession, and the Three Guṇas

Grahas are also classified by varna (caste/profession) and guna (temperament), as described in classical texts like Parāśara Hora and Sarāvalī.

A. Varnas (Professions Indicated by Planets)

  1. Brāhmaṇa (Priests/Teachers)Jupiter, Venus

    • Indicative of wisdom, teaching, counsel, spirituality.

  2. Kṣatriya (Warriors/Rulers)Sun, Mars

    • Signify authority, leadership, courage, police, military, administration.

  3. Vaiśya (Traders/Businessmen)Moon, Mercury

    • Relate to commerce, trade, agriculture, communication.

  4. Śūdra (Labor/Service)Saturn

    • Denote service, labor-intensive work, repetitive tasks.

  5. Antyaja/Mleccha (Foreign or Unconventional)Rahu, Ketu

    • Indicate foreign cultures, unusual professions, unconventional paths.

B. The Three Guṇas

The planets also embody the three cosmic qualities governing nature:

  • Sattva (Purity, Harmony)Sun, Moon, Jupiter

    • Calm, noble, sincere, spiritually inclined.

  • Rajas (Activity, Desire)Mercury, Venus

    • Restless, creative, ambitious, pleasure-seeking.

  • Tamas (Inertia, Darkness)Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu

    • Aggression, lethargy, harshness, destruction, confusion.

These classifications help determine profession, temperament, and patterns of behavior.

4. Natural Planetary Relationships (Naiṣargika Maitrī)

Planets, like individuals, have friendships, rivalries, and neutral relationships. These natural relationships are fixed and determine whether planets support or weaken one another across charts.

Principle of Friendship

A planet generally becomes a natural friend to:

  • the lord of its exaltation sign,

  • the lord of its Mūlatrikoṇa sign,

  • and the lords of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, and 12th signs from its Mūlatrikoṇa.

Table of Natural Friendship

Planet Friends (Mitra) Enemies (Śatru) Neutral (Sama)
Sun Moon, Mars, Jupiter Venus, Saturn Mercury
Moon Sun, Mercury None Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn
Mars Sun, Moon, Jupiter Mercury Venus, Saturn
Mercury Sun, Venus Moon Mars, Jupiter, Saturn
Jupiter Sun, Moon, Mars Mercury, Venus Saturn
Venus Mercury, Saturn Sun, Moon Mars, Jupiter
Saturn Mercury, Venus Sun, Moon, Mars Jupiter

This table is essential for calculating Graha Bala, yogas, and mutual influences.

5. Commentary and Practical Insight

Dr. Pulippani emphasizes:
Students often misunderstand the term malefic. A natural malefic like Mars may become a functional benefic for certain ascendants—for example, Mars is a Yoga-kāraka for Cancer Lagna.

In this chapter, we are concerned only with the inherent nature (Svarūpa) of the planets, not their specific roles in individual horoscopes. Proper prediction requires combining both factors.

Summary of Chapter 3

  • The Navagrahas are the primary agents that deliver karmic results.

  • Jupiter and Venus are the chief benefics, while Saturn and Mars are the chief malefics.

  • Physical appearance is often shaped by the dominant planet in a chart.

  • Each graha has an assigned varna and guna, influencing profession and temperament.

  • Natural planetary friendships determine how planets support or oppose one another.
