Chapter 30: Chandra Yoga Adhyaya
Results of Lunar Combinations
After exploring the powerful Raja Yogas, the text now turns to the most sensitive and foundational factor in a horoscope — the Moon.
The Moon represents the Mind, Emotions, Reputation, and Public Life.
It is the “Seed” of the chart. When the Moon is strong, every other yoga blossoms. When the Moon is weak, even the most promising combinations fail to mature.
This chapter details the classical Lunar Yogas formed by planets placed around the Moon.
1. The Three Primary Lunar Yogas
The sages classify three important yogas based on the placement of planets in the 2nd and 12th from the Moon.
The Sun is excluded from these three definitions.
A. Sunapha Yoga
(Planets in the 2nd from the Moon)
Definition
If one or more planets (other than the Sun) occupy the 2nd House from the Moon.
Results
Such a native:
-
gains wealth through personal effort,
-
possesses intelligence and sharp memory,
-
enjoys good reputation and comforts, and
-
becomes self-made in life.
The exact nature depends on the planet:
-
Mars → wealth through land, courage, real estate.
-
Mercury → wealth through trade, writing, business.
-
Jupiter → wealth through knowledge, dharma, teaching.
B. Anapha Yoga
(Planets in the 12th from the Moon)
Definition
If one or more planets (other than the Sun) occupy the 12th House from the Moon.
Results
The native is:
-
healthy, charming, polite, gentle,
-
fond of pleasures and fine clothes,
-
blessed with mental peace and contentment.
The 12th is the house of Bhoga, so such natives enjoy life without excessive struggle.
C. Durudhara Yoga
(Planets in both the 2nd and 12th from the Moon)
Definition
If there are planets in both the 2nd and 12th houses from the Moon.
Results
This yoga gives the combined power of Sunapha and Anapha:
-
enormous wealth,
-
emotional balance,
-
vehicles, servants, comforts,
-
protection from all sides,
-
a life surrounded by support and luxury.
2. The Terrible Affliction: Kemadruma Yoga
After describing the positive Yogas, the text warns about the worst lunar affliction.
Definition
Kemadruma occurs when:
-
No planet occupies the 2nd or 12th from the Moon,
-
The Moon is not conjunct any planet,
-
The Kendras from the Lagna are empty.
Results
This is one of the most severe yogas in astrology. The native suffers from:
-
loneliness,
-
poverty,
-
instability of mind,
-
lack of support,
-
wandering and grief,
-
repeated failures even after early success.
The sages say:
“Even if born a prince, he becomes a pauper.”
Cancellation (Bhanga)
Fortunately, this yoga is cancelled if:
-
A planet occupies a Kendra from Lagna,
-
A planet occupies a Kendra from the Moon,
-
The Moon is aspected by Benefics — especially Jupiter.
When cancelled, the native becomes exceptionally intelligent and independent.
3. Chandra Adhi Yoga
(Benefics in 6th, 7th, 8th from the Moon)
Definition
If Mercury, Jupiter, or Venus occupy the 6th, 7th, and 8th houses from the Moon.
Results
The native:
-
becomes a commander, minister, or leader,
-
conquers enemies,
-
enjoys marital bliss and public success,
-
lives long and respected.
This is one of the strongest “public life” yogas.
4. Other Specific Lunar Yogas
A. Sakata Yoga (The Wheel of Fortune)
Definition
If the Moon is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th from Jupiter.
Results
Such natives experience:
-
fluctuating fortune,
-
repeated ups and downs,
-
sudden gains followed by losses,
-
emotional instability.
This is the yoga of “roller-coaster luck.”
B. Gaja Kesari Yoga
Definition
If Jupiter occupies a Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) from the Moon.
Results
One of the most auspicious yogas.
The native becomes:
-
famous,
-
virtuous,
-
wealthy,
-
respected by rulers,
-
powerful like an elephant (Gaja) and courageous like a lion (Kesari).
Even a weak chart is uplifted by this yoga.
5. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U.S. Pulippani)
“The Moon is a royal planet. It cannot travel alone.
2nd House (Sunapha): Planets here are the Vanguard — they prepare the path ahead.
12th House (Anapha): Planets here are the Rear Guard — they protect from behind. When the Moon has no guards (Kemadruma), the mind collapses.
When the Moon is supported, the whole chart stabilizes.”
His practical advice:
-
If Kemadruma is present, the native must cultivate Satsang (good company) to anchor the mind.
