Chapter 31: Surya Yoga Adhyaya
Results of Solar Combinations
Having examined the Lunar Yogas — which shape the mind — the text now turns to the King of the planetary cabinet: the Sun.
If the Moon represents inner contentment, the Sun represents outer status, leadership, recognition, and political power.
Solar Yogas reveal the public image and authority the native carries in the world.
These yogas arise from the placement of planets around the Sun, excluding the Moon and the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu.
1. The Three Primary Solar Yogas
The sages classify three major Solar Yogas based on the planetary placements in the 2nd and 12th houses from the Sun.
A. Vesi Yoga
(Planets in the 2nd from the Sun)
Definition
Vesi Yoga is formed when one or more planets (except the Moon, Rahu, Ketu) occupy the 2nd House from the Sun.
Significance
The 2nd from the Sun represents the future direction of the Soul — the tools that the native uses to accomplish worldly goals.
General Result
The native:
-
is truthful and sincere,
-
has a slow, dignified gait,
-
is contented with moderate gains,
-
possesses a tall, impressive physique,
-
performs actions with deliberation rather than haste.
Planet-Specific Results
-
Jupiter forming Vesi: Courageous, steady, noble-minded.
-
Saturn forming Vesi: Business-minded but may suffer reputation damage.
-
Venus forming Vesi: Wealthy but timid or overly gentle.
B. Vasi Yoga
(Planets in the 12th from the Sun)
Definition
Vasi Yoga is formed when planets occupy the 12th House from the Sun.
Significance
The 12th from the Sun shows the past, the karmic reservoir and background support that shapes the native’s power.
General Result
The native becomes:
-
skilled in arts and crafts,
-
charitable and well-disposed,
-
famous and socially influential,
-
physically strong and attractive,
-
blessed with inner discipline.
Planet-Specific Results
-
Jupiter forming Vasi: Wise, ministerial, righteous.
-
Mars forming Vasi: Renowned for courage — sometimes cruelty.
Vasi is considered stronger than Vesi, as planets behind the Sun represent deep inner power.
C. Ubhayachari Yoga
(Planets in both the 2nd and 12th from the Sun)
Definition
If planets exist on both sides of the Sun — in the 2nd and 12th houses — Ubhayachari Yoga is formed.
Results
This is one of the most powerful Solar Yogas.
The native:
-
rises to royal status or becomes equal to a King,
-
possesses immense wealth, influence, and social respect,
-
has a symmetrical, commanding physique,
-
enjoys loyal subordinates and strong administration.
This yoga creates political stability, making it ideal for governors, leaders, and high-ranking officials.
2. Budha–Aditya Yoga (Nipuna Yoga)
Although primarily a conjunction, the text includes it as a Solar Yoga due to its dominance in shaping intelligence.
Definition
Formed when Sun and Mercury are conjoined, or Mercury is in the 2nd or 12th from the Sun.
Results
“Nipuna” means “Expert.”
The native becomes:
-
intellectually brilliant,
-
excellent in mathematics, astrology, and sciences,
-
skilled in speech and writing,
-
famous for analytical abilities.
Combustion Note
If Mercury is too close to the Sun, it becomes combust:
-
External results weaken (nervous issues, career instability).
-
But internal intelligence becomes razor sharp.
Thus, combustion modifies but does not nullify the yoga.
3. Special Interpretative Principles of Solar Yogas
The author provides deeper logic behind these yogas:
Planets in the 2nd from the Sun
These planets are pushed forward by the Sun’s rays.
They become the primary tools through which the native achieves success.
-
Mars → Success through aggression/initiative.
-
Mercury → Success through intellect.
-
Jupiter → Success through dharma and counsel.
Planets in the 12th from the Sun
These planets are the motivation behind the native’s actions.
They show the inner engine that drives ambition.
-
Saturn → Driven by duty, fear, or responsibility.
-
Venus → Driven by desire, beauty, or luxury.
This distinction is crucial for psychological interpretation.
4. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U.S. Pulippani)
“Lunar Yogas show how happy the mind is.
Solar Yogas show how powerful the life is.”
He adds:
-
A person may enjoy Vesi/Vasi Yogas and rise to wealth or fame —
but still suffer internally if the Moon is afflicted (Kemadruma). -
Conversely, a person may be internally content (strong Moon Yogas)
but not achieve public recognition if the Sun is weak.
This explains:
-
the Lonely Rich Man,
-
the Spiritual Hermit,
-
the Silent Genius, and
-
the Public Leader with private sorrow.
Solar Yogas determine external success,
while Lunar Yogas determine the internal experience of that success.
