Chapter 32: Nabhasa Yoga Adhyaya
Results of Celestial Shapes
After covering the major planet-based yogas, Jathaka Sara Dheepa now introduces one of the most visually striking and foundational systems in Vedic astrology — the Nabhasa Yogas.
These yogas are not based on:
-
Planetary lordship
-
Dignity (exaltation/debilitation)
-
Planetary aspects
-
Dasa periods
Instead, they depend entirely on the geometric arrangement of planets in the zodiac.
Because of this, the Nabhasa Yogas shape the overall personality, life atmosphere, and inner temperament of the native right from birth.
They form the *psychological blueprint *of the horoscope.
1. Classification of Nabhasa Yogas
The sages enumerate 32 Nabhasa Yogas, divided into four major groups:
-
Ashraya Yogas (3) – Based on the nature of signs
-
Dala Yogas (2) – Based on Benefics and Malefics in Kendras
-
Akriti Yogas (20) – Based on specific geometrical formations
-
Sankhya Yogas (7) – Based on the number of signs occupied
These yogas are permanent in effect. Their results do not come and go with planetary periods.
2. Ashraya Yogas (The Refuge Yogas)
These depend on whether all planets fall in Movable, Fixed, or Dual signs.
A. Rajju Yoga (Rope Yoga)
All planets in Movable Signs
-
Constant travel
-
Restlessness, ambition
-
Wealth from foreign lands
-
Lack of stability in home and mind
B. Musala Yoga (Pestle Yoga)
All planets in Fixed Signs
-
Wealthy, proud, determined
-
Strong-willed and conservative
-
Slow but steady rise in life
C. Nala Yoga (Reed Yoga)
All planets in Dual Signs
-
Flexible, adaptable, helpful
-
Dual-minded and fluctuating
-
May have a physical defect or nervous issues
3. Dala Yogas (The Team Formations)
These focus on the planets in the Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10).
A. Mala Yoga (Garland Yoga)
Only Benefics occupy the Kendras
( Mercury, Jupiter, Venus )
-
Always cheerful and wealthy
-
Loved by all, fond of vehicles and fine food
-
Virtuous and refined
B. Sarpa Yoga (Serpent Yoga)
Only Malefics occupy the Kendras
( Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu )
-
Much suffering and poverty
-
Cruel, harsh, dependent on others
-
Obstacles at every step
Mala = Garland → Beauty and harmony
Sarpa = Snake → Fear and difficulty
4. Akriti Yogas (Shape-Based Yogas)
These 20 yogas are formed by the specific shape created by the planetary distribution.
Some prominent examples:
A. Gada Yoga (The Mace)
All planets in two adjacent Kendras (e.g., 1st & 4th)
-
Strong, wealthy, weapon-skilled
-
Bold and powerful personality
B. Sakata Yoga (The Cart)
All planets in the 1st and 7th houses
-
Poverty, illness, instability
-
Pulled around by others like a cart
C. Vihaga Yoga (The Bird)
All planets in the 4th and 10th houses
-
Wanderer, messenger, restless
-
Quarrelsome, unpredictable life
D. Shringataka Yoga (The Mountain Peak)
Planets in 1st, 5th, 9th (trines)
-
Blessed life, great fortune
-
Favored by kings, steady prosperity
E. Hala Yoga (The Plough)
Planets in trinal houses like 2,6,10 or 3,7,11
-
Hard-working, agricultural life
-
Lives like an ox — toil and physical work
F. Kamala Yoga (The Lotus)
Planets in all four Kendras (1,4,7,10)
-
Extremely lucky
-
King-like fortune
-
Fame, wealth, and a good legacy
This is one of the most auspicious Nabhasa Yogas.
5. Sankhya Yogas (Number-Based Yogas)
If no specific shape emerges, the sage checks how many signs the planets occupy.
| Signs Occupied | Yoga | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | Veena (Lute) | Musical, happy, wealthy |
| 6 | Dama (Cord) | Charitable, wealthy |
| 5 | Pasha (Noose) | Talkative, immoral, prone to imprisonment |
| 4 | Kedara (Field) | Farmer, humble, truthful |
| 3 | Shula (Spike) | Angry, violent, poor |
| 2 | Yuga (Pair) | Outcaste, heretic, poor |
| 1 | Gola (Sphere) | Worst yoga; short-lived, miserable |
Gola Yoga — where all 7 planets cluster in a single sign — is extremely rare and extremely inauspicious.
6. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U.S. Pulippani)
“Nabhasa Yogas describe the climate of a person’s life, not the weather.”
He offers three important clarifications:
1. Lifelong Effect
-
Raja Yogas activate during the Dasa of the relevant planet.
-
Nabhasa Yogas operate continuously, regardless of Dasa.
2. Personality Over Event
These yogas define:
-
Temperament
-
Basic character
-
General strengths and weaknesses
-
Lived experience
3. Hierarchy of Interpretation
If a powerful Akriti Yoga exists (like Kamala or Gada), it overrides the numerical Sankhya Yoga.
