Chapter 39: Śani Daśā Phala

Results of Saturn’s Major Period

Duration: 19 Years
Domains: Delay, Discipline, Hard Work, Sorrow, Longevity, Service, Karma

Saturn (Śani), the great Karmakāraka, is the most feared yet most just planet in the horoscope. His daśā is the longest of all—nineteen years—and represents a prolonged phase of karmic settlement. While planets like Jupiter bring blessings and Venus brings luxuries, Saturn brings lessons. Only through discipline, humility, and sincere effort does the native find real progress.

Śani’s daśā is not meant to punish—it is meant to mature.

1. General Results of Śani Daśā

The scripture describes Saturn as the "Cold Son of the Sun"—a planet of effort, austerity, and realism.

  • The Grind:
Progress becomes slow and laborious. The native feels as though fate itself is testing them. Success, if attained, comes only through perseverance.

  • Sorrow:
Loss of elders, separation from loved ones, or emotional isolation. The native may feel unsupported or lonely.

  • Health:
Chronic diseases (dīrgha roga) arise—arthritis, paralysis, lung disorders, constipation, dental issues, or neural weakness.
The body becomes dry, stiff, or lean.

  • Company:
Association with laborers, humble workers, or people of lower status. Saturn brings the native down to the ground so they can rebuild from truth.

  • Character Formation:
These nineteen years sculpt discipline, wisdom, humility, and resilience. When the daśā ends, the native is no longer the same person.

2. Results Based on Strength of Saturn

Condition of Saturn Results
Strong Saturn (Exalted in Libra, Own in Capricorn/Aquarius, or as Yogakāraka) The Leader of the Masses. The native rises slowly to occupy influential positions—heads of local bodies, industries, labor unions, or public institutions. Wealth accumulates steadily. Lifestyle remains simple but honorable. The native becomes reliable and respected.
Weak Saturn (Debilitated in Aries, or in 8th/12th) The Servant. Financial loss, humiliation, fear of death, accidents, or chronic disease. The native may face a fall in status or be forced into menial labor. There is constant anxiety, legal trouble, or imprisonment.

3. The Nine Antardaśās Under Śani

These nineteen years move through the following karmic phases:

1. Śani–Śani (3 years, 3 days)

The Intense Grind.

  • Major obstacles

  • Illness to family members

  • Agricultural losses

  • If Saturn is strong: acquisition of land, property, or long-term assets

A period that demands patience and endurance.

2. Śani–Budha (2 years, 8 months, 9 days)

The Relief.
Mercury is Saturn’s closest ally.

  • Business growth

  • Intellectual clarity

  • Success in writing, accounts, trade

  • Practical solutions to long-term problems

One of the more supportive segments.

3. Śani–Ketu (1 year, 1 month, 9 days)

The Hermit.

  • Detachment from worldly affairs

  • Strange fears or hidden diseases

  • Loss of interest in ambition

  • Spiritual inclination or withdrawal

A sensitive, inward-facing period.

4. Śani–Śukra (3 years, 2 months)

The Reward Phase.
This is the best part of Saturn Daśā.

  • Marriage or marital harmony

  • Prosperity, vehicles, comforts

  • Acquisition of ornaments, land, or luxury

  • Increase in social respect

Śukra softens Saturn’s austerity with grace.

5. Śani–Sūrya (11 months, 12 days)

The Clash.

  • Conflict with authorities, father, or government

  • Heart or eye trouble

  • Loss of reputation if the Sun is weak

Saturn and Sun are natural enemies; their combination brings ego conflicts.

6. Śani–Chandra (1 year, 7 months)

The Shadow of Sade Sati.

  • Mental pressure, depression (punarphoo)

  • Loss or illness of mother

  • Financial instability

  • Fear of water, phobias

Emotional vulnerability is high.

7. Śani–Maṅgala (1 year, 1 month, 9 days)

Agni–Māruta (Fire–Wind).
⚠️ The most dangerous bhukti.

  • Accidents, fires, injuries

  • Fractures, surgeries

  • Property disputes

  • Sudden quarrels or violence

Extreme caution is required.

8. Śani–Rāhu (2 years, 10 months, 6 days)

The Storm.

  • Anxiety, fear of enemies

  • Confusion, wandering, aimlessness

  • Encounters with low people or scandal

  • But: If Rāhu is in 3/6/11, the native gets massive victory, even fame

This period amplifies the karmic trials.

9. Śani–Guru (2 years, 6 months, 12 days)

Dharma–Karma Balance.
The daśā ends on a philosophical and stabilizing note.

  • Religious activities

  • Blessing from elders

  • Wisdom, clarity, detachment

  • Respect from society

Guru softens the harsh edges of Saturn’s long lessons.

4. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

“Śani Daśā becomes doubly intense when it coincides with Sade Sati.”

The native may face prolonged hardship when Saturn’s daśā overlaps with Saturn’s transit over the Moon (7.5 years).

Exceptions:

  • For Taurus and Libra Lagnas, Saturn is a Yogakāraka.

  • For these natives, Śani Daśā becomes the Daśā of Fortune, not suffering.

Saturn rewards righteousness more than intelligence. Those who live ethically rise during this period.
