Chapter 43: Aṣṭakavarga Phala Adhyāya

The Results of the Eight-Fold Strength System

Key Themes: Planetary Strength, Bindus, House Power, Transit Interpretation, Mathematical Destiny

After learning the Daśā system—which tells when events unfold—the next step is to measure how strongly those events will manifest. Jātaka Sāra Dīpa now turns to the profound and mathematical system known as Aṣṭakavarga, the only method in Vedic Astrology that gives quantitative planetary strength.

Aṣṭakavarga shows:
“Will the promised yoga actually deliver?”

1. The Concept of Aṣṭakavarga

The Rishis explain that each planet releases subtle rays of energy across the zodiac. These rays either support a sign or weaken it.

The Eight Contributors:

  1. Sun

  2. Moon

  3. Mars

  4. Mercury

  5. Jupiter

  6. Venus

  7. Saturn

  8. Lagna (Ascendant)

Each one contributes Bindus (positive points) or Rekhas (negative marks) based on precise rules.

Purpose of the System

While exaltation and debilitation show status, Aṣṭakavarga shows functionality.

A planet may sit like a king in a palace (exalted),
—but if it gives 0 Bindus, it is a king with no soldiers.
It cannot protect you.

Aṣṭakavarga quantifies destiny.

2. Bhinnaṣṭakavarga — Individual Planetary Scores

Each planet receives its own 12-sign chart with points ranging from 0 to 8.

Bindu Interpretation

Points (Bindus) Strength Result
0–3 Weak Loss, anxiety, poor results in Dasa and transit
4 Medium Mixed result
5–8 Strong Wealth, success, protection, favorable outcomes

Important Insight

If a planet is exalted but has low Bindus, its yogas malfunction.

Example:
Jupiter exalted in Cancer normally gives Gaja Keśarī Yoga,
but if Jupiter has only 2 Bindus in Cancer,
the yoga becomes weak or ineffective.

Thus Aṣṭakavarga acts as a quality control system.

3. Sarvāṣṭakavarga — Total Strength of Each House

When the Bindus of all 7 planets are added for a sign, the total is called SAV.

Total Points Across the Zodiac:

337, distributed unevenly across 12 houses.

General Guidelines

SAV Points Interpretation
Below 25 Weak house; struggles, failures
25–28 Moderate; normal life
29–31 Good; prosperity begins
32 and above Excellent; high achievements

Examples

  • If 2nd House SAV < 25: Savings leak, money fluctuates.

  • If 10th House SAV ≥ 32: The native becomes a recognized leader.

  • If 11th House SAV ≥ 34: Extraordinary gains and influence.

SAV reveals the true power of each house.

4. Application to Transits (Gochara)

The author emphasizes a brilliant rule:

Transits must be judged primarily through Aṣṭakavarga, not classical rules.

Golden Principles

A. Good Transit

  • If a transiting planet enters a sign where

    • Its own BAV score is 5 or more, OR

    • The SAV score is 30 or more,
→ the transit always gives excellent results.

Even Sade Sati becomes beneficial if Saturn has high Bindus.

B. Bad Transit

  • If the planet transits a sign with

    • 0–2 Bindus, OR

    • SAV < 25,
→ suffering occurs even if the transit is traditionally good
(e.g., Jupiter in 11th giving gains may still fail).

Aṣṭakavarga acts like the “real permission slip” for planets.

5. Special Technical Rules

A. Kakṣā (Micro-Subdivision)

Each sign (30°) is divided into 8 Kakṣās of 3°45' each.
Each kakṣā belongs to one of the eight contributors (Sun, Moon, Mars…).

This allows astrologers to predict exact dates when transit results manifest—
sometimes to the day.

B. Śodhya Pinda

A complex final calculation used to determine:

  • Peak periods of wealth

  • Major turning points

  • In rare cases, the probable period of death

It represents the “net karmic weight” of a planet.

6. Translator’s Commentary — Dr. U. S. Pulippani

“If Daśā is the ship and the planet is the captain,
Aṣṭakavarga is the depth of the ocean.”

Pulippani stresses:

  • Before predicting Sade Sati or Saturn’s hardship,
check Saturn’s Bindus in that sign.

If Saturn contributes 6 or 7 Bindus, then:

  • Sade Sati becomes a period of power

  • Promotions occur

  • The person rises through struggle

He calls Aṣṭakavarga the Supreme Judge
the final authority that confirms or denies every yoga and every transit.

Summary of Chapter 43

  • Bindus:

    • 5+ = Strong,

    • 3 or fewer = Weak

  • SAV:

    • 30+ points in a house bring success

  • Purpose:

    • Finest tool for judging transits,

    • Confirms the strength of Daśā results

  • Insight:
Exalted planets can fail, and debilitated planets can succeed—
Aṣṭakavarga reveals the truth beyond appearances.
