Chapter 44: Gochara Phala Adhyāya
The Results of Planetary Transits
Key Themes: Moon as the Axis, Sade Sati, Guru Bala, Vedha (Obstruction), Murthi (Planetary Forms), Ashtakavarga Integration
After mastering the Daśā system (which reveals when karmic seeds ripen), the next step is to understand Gochara—the real-time movement of planets. Transits determine how strongly an event manifests in the material world.
The author compares Daśā to a seed and Gochara to rain:
“A seed may be powerful, but without rain it will not sprout.”
Thus, both systems must be read together.
1. The Moon as the Reference Point
In Jātaka Sāra Dīpa, as in classical Vedic astrology, all transits are judged from the Janma Rāśi (Moon Sign)—not from the Ascendant.
Why the Moon?
-
The Moon governs mind, perception, emotion, and experience.
-
Events become meaningful only when they are felt by the mind.
-
Therefore, the Moon becomes the pivot for gauging transits.
This rule is non-negotiable.
2. General Results of Transits
Planets are divided into two groups:
A. Slow-Moving Planets (Major Life-Changers)
These shape entire eras in life.
1. Saturn (Śani) — 2.5 years per sign
-
Auspicious Houses: 3rd, 6th, 11th
→ Success, victory, rise in status. -
Inauspicious Houses:
-
12th → Start of Sade Sati
-
1st → Middle of Sade Sati
-
2nd → End of Sade Sati
-
4th → Ardhaṣṭama Śani (domestic suffering)
-
8th → Aṣṭama Śani (fear, disease, danger)
-
2. Jupiter (Guru) — 1 year per sign
-
Auspicious: 2, 5, 7, 9, 11
→ Marriage, children, wealth, fame. -
Inauspicious: 3, 4, 8, 10, 12
→ Loss of status, health issues, anxiety.
3. Rahu & Ketu — 1.5 years per sign
-
Auspicious: 3, 6, 11
-
Inauspicious: 5, 7, 8, 12
→ Fear, confusion, scandals, accidents.
B. Fast-Moving Planets (Daily and Monthly Triggers)
| Planet | Best Transit Houses | General Result |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | 3, 6, 10, 11 | Success, health, authority |
| Mars | 3, 6, 11 | Victory, courage, energy |
| Mercury | 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11 | Business, learning, communication |
| Venus | Except 6, 7, 10 | Romance, pleasure, comfort |
| Moon | 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11 | Daily emotional flow; good mood |
| Saturn/Jupiter | As above | Long-term results |
Fast planets trigger events promised by Dasa and supported by slow-planet transits.
3. Vedha — The Principle of Obstruction
A brilliant rule in Jātaka Sāra Dīpa:
A good transit can be blocked by another planet.
This is called Vedha (“piercing” or “blocking”).
Example
-
Jupiter in 2nd = wealth.
-
But if Sun transits the 12th, Sun causes a Vedha to Jupiter.
→ Result: Wealth is blocked; gains are delayed.
Special Exceptions
-
Sun and Saturn never obstruct each other.
-
Moon and Mercury never obstruct each other.
These pairs move harmoniously in transit analysis.
Vedha explains why a good Jupiter transit sometimes fails.
4. The Four Mūrti Forms
When a planet enters a new sign, its form is determined by the Moon’s position at that exact moment. These forms override many classical rules.
1. Swarna (Gold) Mūrti
-
Condition: Moon in 1, 6, 11
-
Result: All results become excellent.
Even Sade Sati becomes favorable.
2. Rajatha (Silver) Mūrti
-
Moon in 2, 5, 9
-
Result: Very good; fame and honor.
3. Tamra (Copper) Mūrti
-
Moon in 3, 7, 10
-
Result: Moderate; mixed effects.
4. Loha (Iron) Mūrti
-
Moon in 4, 8, 12
-
Result: Very bad; financial setbacks, conflict, suffering.
Even good planets give weak results.
This is one of the most practical predictive tools.
5. Integrating Aṣṭakavarga with Gochara
The text emphasizes that Aṣṭakavarga is the master filter.
Dr. U. S. Pulippani explains:
“Never predict transit results without checking the Aṣṭakavarga Bindus.”
Key Integration Examples
Case 1 — Jupiter in 8th (Traditionally Bad)
But:
-
Jupiter has 6 Bindus in that sign,
-
AND it enters as a Gold Mūrti,
→ Result:
Not trouble, but inheritance, insurance claims, or spiritual upliftment.
Case 2 — Saturn’s Sade Sati
If the sign Saturn passes has 30+ SAV points,
Sade Sati elevates the person, rather than harming them.
Thus Ashtakavarga reveals the real power of a transit.
Summary of Chapter 44
-
Transits must be judged from the Moon Sign.
-
Upachaya houses (3, 6, 11) give progress for almost all planets.
-
Dusthanas (8, 12) are generally difficult.
-
Vedha can completely block good results.
-
Murthi forms determine the quality of the transit’s arrival.
Ashtakavarga must be applied to confirm or deny transit effects.
