Chapter 45: Rāśmi & Avasthā Phala

The Power of Planetary Rays & States

Key Themes: Planetary Radiance, Measuring Worldly Success, Quality of Planetary Expression, Ten Psychological States of Planets

Jātaka Sāra Dīpa moves from the mathematical precision of Aṣṭakavarga to an even subtler science—Rāśmi, the “Rays” that planets emit. While Aṣṭakavarga measures strength, Rāśmi measures impact. It quantifies the intensity with which a planet delivers its results.

A planet may occupy an auspicious house, but if its Rāśmis are weak, its blessings are faint—like a brilliant jewel with no light to shine through it.

1. The Concept of Rāśmi (Planetary Rays)

Each planet has a maximum possible “Ray Count” when in Deep Exaltation. From this peak, the rays diminish gradually toward Debilitation, where they fall to zero.

Maximum Rāśmi at Exaltation

Planet Rays
Sun 30 Rays
Moon 21 Rays
Mars 7 Rays
Mercury 9 Rays
Jupiter 10 Rays
Venus 26 Rays
Saturn 4 Rays

The Calculation Principle

Rāśmis change gradually as a planet moves between exaltation and debilitation.

  • Exalted = Full Rays

  • Debilitated = 0 Rays

  • Intermediate = Proportional Rays (Linear Method)

  • Retrograde Planets → Double or Triple Rays
    (Retrogression = Internal Power)

Thus, a debilitated planet with retrograde motion can still become potent.

2. Total Rays and Social Status

Adding together the rays of all seven planets yields the Total Rāśmi Score—a decisive indicator of the native’s social level, influence, and material reach.

Interpretation of Total Rays

Total Rays Result
0 – 5 Extreme poverty, wandering life, struggle for survival
10 – 15 Average life with moderate comforts
15 – 20 Respectable, stable, socially honored
25 – 30 High status—leaders, executives, political influence
35+ Rāja Yoga Level — rulers, ministers, magnates, tycoons

This is one of the most powerful metrics in classical astrology.
Two charts with identical yogas may differ dramatically in outcome due to differences in Rāśmi.

3. Graha Avasthās (The Ten Planetary States)

Beyond rays, each planet has a state or mood (Avasthā), shaping the quality of its results.

These ten Daśā Avasthās reveal how the planet behaves psychologically.

Avasthā Meaning Condition Result
1. Dīpta Blazing Exalted Fame, power, wealth, brilliance
2. Svastha Comfortable Own sign Health, stability, success
3. Muditā Delighted Friend’s sign Luxury, perfumes, happiness
4. Śāntā Peaceful Benefic varga Learning, calm mind
5. Śaktā Capable Retrograde High power, strong achievements
6. Pīdītā Tortured Last degree of sign Suffering, sickness, criminal tendencies
7. Dīnā Wretched Debilitated Poverty, fear, humiliation
8. Vikala Mutilated Combust Mental instability, diseases, isolation
9. Khala Wicked Malefic varga Quarrels, harsh words, losses
10. Bhīta Frightened Fast/accelerated motion Fear, instability, wandering

Important Note

Even an exalted planet becomes weak when:

  • Combust (Vikala)

  • In the last degree (Pīdītā)

  • Debilitated (Dīnā)

Thus Avasthā is a crucial filter over all other yogas.

4. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

Dr. Pulippani beautifully summarizes:

“Rāśmi explains the difference between a Prime Minister and a Panchayat President.”

Two natives may both have:

  • Gaja Kesari Yoga

  • Rāja Yogas

  • Strong Daśā

Yet:

  • One becomes a National Leader

  • The other becomes a Local Leader

Why?
The first has High Rāśmi (Total 30+):
→ The lantern has oil.

The second has Low Rāśmi (15 or less):
→ The lantern burns dimly.

He also emphasizes:

“Combustion overrides everything. Even exalted planets fail in Vikala Avasthā.”

Summary of Chapter 45

  • Rāśmis measure intensity — the “voltage” of planetary effects.

  • Avasthās measure quality — the psychological tone of results.

  • A Total Rāśmi score above 25 indicates an influential and prosperous life.

  • Retrograde planets gain extraordinary power.

  • Combust planets lose most of their strength, even if exalted.
