Chapter 50: Ayurdhaya Phala Adhyaya
The Calculation of Longevity
Key Themes: Alpa–Madhya–Purna Ayu, Planetary Longevity (Pindāyurdaya), Navamsa Method, Maraka Periods, and the Mathematics of Life Span.
The great astrologer Nrusimha Daivajna, in Jathaka Sara Dheepa, insists that no prediction should be given before establishing the longevity of the native.
He writes:
“Without longevity, a horoscope is like a palace built upon sand—beautiful to behold, but incapable of standing.”
Thus, the first duty of an astrologer is to determine whether the native’s life will be short, medium, or full.
1. The Three Categories of Life
Long life is not random; it arises from the interplay between the Lagna, the 8th House, and the Ayush Karaka (Saturn).
The author divides life into three major spans:
A. Alpa Ayu (Short Life: 0 – 32 Years)
General Indicators
Life is considered Alpa Ayu if:
-
Both the Lagna Lord and 8th Lord are weak, combust, retrograde, or placed in the 6th or 12th.
-
The Moon (life-flow and fluids) is debilitated or afflicted.
Classical Combinations
-
Saturn and Mars together in the Lagna or 7th house, with a weak Moon → severe vulnerability to early death.
-
Malefics occupying the 8th house, while the Kendras lack benefics → fragile life core.
-
Balarishta:
-
Death before 8 years = mother’s karmic influence.
-
Death before 12 years = father’s karmic influence.
-
Most longevity calculations should be applied only after age 12.
-
These early-death combinations are usually cancelled if the chart has strong benefic aspects or powerful Shubha Yogas.
B. Madhya Ayu (Middle Life: 33 – 66 Years)
General Indicators
-
Lagna Lord strong, but 8th Lord weak — or vice versa.
-
Benefic planets (especially Jupiter) occupying the 8th.
-
Moderate overall planetary strength.
Timing Clues
-
The native often dies during the 2nd or 3rd Shoola Dasa,
-
or during the 4th Vimshottari Dasa.
This middle-span life is considered the most common in Kali Yuga.
C. Purna Ayu (Long Life: 66 – 100+ Years)
General Indicators
Life is considered “Full” when:
-
Both Lagna Lord and 8th Lord are strong and well-placed.
-
Saturn is strong in the 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 8th house (Ayushkaraka position).
-
Jupiter or Venus influencing the Lagna.
Special Yogas
-
Divya Ayu:
If benefics occupy Kendras and the 8th house is empty → the native often surpasses 80 years. -
Amitha Ayu:
Jupiter + Moon together in Cancer Lagna, supported by Venus/Mercury in Kendras →
Life exceeds 100 years (seen in saints, sages, and spiritual masters).
2. Mathematical Systems of Longevity
The text presents several computational methods. Among them, two are emphasized as authoritative:
A. Pindāyurdaya (Planetary Contribution Method)
Each planet “donates” a certain number of years depending on its strength.
Maximum Years a Planet Can Grant
| Planet | Maximum Years |
|---|---|
| Sun | 19 |
| Moon | 25 |
| Mars | 15 |
| Mercury | 12 |
| Jupiter | 15 |
| Venus | 21 |
| Saturn | 20 |
| Total theoretical maximum ≈ 127 years |
These years are then reduced based on planetary afflictions.
Reductions (Harana)
-
Combustion (Astangata):
Planet loses ½ its contribution (except Venus and Saturn). -
Enemy Sign:
Planet loses ⅓ of its contribution. -
Visible Half (Houses 7–12):
Planet loses a portion because it has “spent” its rays.
After reductions, the total years yield the approximate life span.
B. Amsāyurdaya (Navamsa-Based Longevity)
Considered the most precise method by Satyacharya.
Rules
-
A planet in Vargottama or Exaltation → its contribution triples.
-
A planet in Own Sign → contribution doubles.
-
A planet in Debilitation → contribution becomes zero.
-
Total longevity derived from the sum of contributions of all planets.
This method is highly accurate when birth time is exact.
3. The “Vakya” (Tamil) Rule — Quick Estimation
A simple rule based on the 8th Lord’s placement:
| 8th Lord’s Position | Expected Lifespan |
|---|---|
| 12th or 9th | ~100 years |
| 8th, 10th, 5th | ~75 years |
| 4th or 7th | ~60 years |
| 6th | ~50 years |
This rule is used widely in South India for rapid estimation.
4. The Maraka Principle (Death Timing)
Astrological death usually occurs during:
-
The Dasa or Antardasa of the Maraka planets (2nd and 7th lords),
-
Or during the Dasa of the 8th Lord,
-
Or during the 3rd or 8th from the Dasa Lord.
Dr. Pulippani’s “Safety Check”
He advises:
-
Identify whether the chart is Alpa, Madhya, or Purna Ayu
(based on Lagna Lord vs. 8th Lord strength). -
Check the Dasa sequence:
-
If Alpa Ayu → death in the 3rd Vimshottari Dasa.
-
If Purna Ayu → death in the 7th Vimshottari Dasa.
-
This method is extremely reliable when birth time is accurate.
Summary of Chapter 50
-
Short Life: Weak Lagna + weak 8th Lord + malefics in Kendras.
-
Medium Life: Mixed strength.
-
Long Life: Strong Lagna, strong 8th house, strong Saturn.
-
Pindāyurdaya: Based on total years planets contribute.
-
Amsāyurdaya: Based on Navamsas traversed.
-
Rule: Yogas cannot manifest without sufficient lifespan.
Longevity is the foundation upon which every other prediction is built.
