Chapter 6: Tithi & Vara Phala

The Results of Lunar Days and Weekdays

After discussing the broader divisions of time—Year, Ayana, Ṛtu, Māsa, and Pakṣa—the text now examines two highly personal components of the Pañcāṅga: Tithi (lunar day) and Vara (weekday). These are the most immediate expressions of the Moon and Sun at the moment of birth, and they strongly shape temperament, vitality, and behavior.

1. The Fifteen Tithis (Lunar Days)

A Tithi is determined by the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon. Classical texts group the Tithis into five categories that reveal their essential nature:

Tithi Groups

  • Nanda (Joyous): 1, 6, 11 – auspicious, growth-oriented.

  • Bhadrā (Wise): 2, 7, 12 – good for learning and diplomacy.

  • Jaya (Victorious): 3, 8, 13 – victorious, forceful, achievement-oriented.

  • Riktā (Empty/Harsh): 4, 9, 14 – challenging, sharp, aggressive.

  • Pūrṇa (Full/Complete): 5, 10, 15 – auspicious, fulfilling, prosperous.

Results of Birth in Each Tithi

Tithi Name Nature of the Native
1 Pratipadā Independent, wandering nature; may waste wealth.
2 Dvitīyā Truthful, gentle, pleasant; fond of travel or foreign places.
3 Tṛtīyā Wealthy, intelligent, fond of learning.
4 Caturthī Argumentative, secretive, brave; ruled by Gaṇeśa.
5 Pañcamī Intelligent, long-lived, fond of good food and fragrances.
6 Ṣaṣṭhī Famous, determined, pleasure-seeking, many friends.
7 Saptamī Lucky, respectful to elders, wealthy.
8 Aṣṭamī Truthful but faces obstacles; strong Śiva influence.
9 Navamī Courageous, aggressive, sharp-tongued; fond of weapons.
10 Daśamī Virtuous, religious, happy; becomes a leader or authority.
11 Ekādaśī Pure-hearted, wealthy, spiritual, very intelligent.
12 Dvādaśī Learned, charitable, peaceful disposition.
13 Trayodaśī Friendly, successful, loved by relatives.
14 Caturdaśī Fierce, bold; may be sharp-tempered or immoral.
15 Pūrṇimā (Full Moon) Beautiful body, wealthy, happy, enjoys life fully.
30 Amāvasyā (New Moon) Secretive, diplomatic, prone to anxiety or ill health.

The Tithi provides insight into emotional structure and the flow of the native’s life-energy.

2. The Seven Varas (Weekdays)

The weekday (Vara) of birth reflects the physical vitality and behavioral mode of the native, as each Vara is governed by a planet.

3. Translator’s Note (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

Pulippani emphasizes the powerful interaction between Tithi and Vara:

“Vara symbolizes the physical body and vitality (Agni), while Tithi reflects the mind and emotions (Jala).

Birth on Tuesday (Mars) during Caturthī (Riktā) produces an extremely aggressive and fiery personality.

Conversely, birth on Thursday (Jupiter) during Pañcamī (Pūrṇa) yields a balanced, wise, spiritual nature.”

Thus, predictions must always consider the combined influence of Vara and Tithi, not each in isolation.
