Chapter 7: Nakṣatra Phala Adhyāya

The Results of Birth Stars

Among the five limbs of the Pañcāṅga, the Nakṣatra is regarded as the most influential. While Saṁvatsara, Māsa, Vara, and Tithi create the background environment of life, the Nakṣatra occupied by the Moon at birth determines:

  • the mind and psychology,

  • the longevity tendencies,

  • and most importantly, the starting point of Vimśottarī Daśā, which dictates the timing of events.

Thus, the Nakṣatra forms the very spine of predictive astrology.

1. The 27 Nakṣatras and Their Results

The zodiac of 360° is divided into 27 stellar mansions, each with its own deity, ruling planet, temperament, and karmic signature. The characteristics given below summarize the essential traits traditionally assigned to natives born under each star.

Each Nakṣatra shapes the mental nature, behavioral patterns, and life tendencies of the native more strongly than even the Sun sign or Moon sign.

2. The Three Gaṇas (Temperaments)

Classical texts classify the 27 Nakṣatras into three psychological temperaments, known as Gaṇas. These are extremely important for marriage compatibility (Vivāha Matching) and assessing interpersonal harmony.

1. Deva Gaṇa (Divine Nature)

Soft, gentle, devotional, and virtuous.

Stars:
Aśvinī, Mṛgaśīrṣa, Punarvasu, Puṣya, Hastā, Svātī, Anurādhā, Śravaṇa, Revatī.

2. Manuṣya Gaṇa (Human Nature)

Balanced, pragmatic, mixture of good and bad qualities.

Stars:
Bharanī, Rohiṇī, Ārdrā, Pūrvaphālgunī, Uttaraphālgunī, Pūrvāṣāḍhā, Uttarāṣāḍhā, Pūrvabhādrapadā, Uttarabhādrapadā.

3. Rākṣasa Gaṇa (Intense/Demonic Nature)

Aggressive, independent, powerful, sometimes harsh; capable of great achievements.

Stars:
Kṛttikā, Āśleṣā, Maghā, Citrā, Viśākhā, Jyeṣṭhā, Mūla, Dhaniṣṭhā, Śatabhiṣā.

The Gaṇa indicates how the native reacts, responds, and relates to the world and to others.

3. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

“Nakṣatra results must always be read alongside Navāṁśa placement, graha aspects, and Moon strength.

Most importantly, the Janma Nakṣatra forms the backbone of the Vimśottarī Daśā system.
Without knowing the Moon’s Nakṣatra at birth, no astrologer can time events with accuracy.”

Thus, while rāśis describe physical and material life, Nakṣatra reveals the soul-pattern, the karmic script, and the unfolding of destiny.
