Chapter 8: Yoga & Karaṇa Phala

Results of Nitya Yogas and Half-Lunar Days

With this chapter, the Pañcāṅga analysis reaches completion. Having examined Saṁvatsara (Year), Ayana (Solar Course), Ṛtu (Season), Māsa (Month), Pakṣa (Fortnight), Tithi (Lunar Day), Vara (Weekday), and Nakṣatra (Birth Star), the author now turns to the final two limbs:

  • Yoga — the combined effect of Sun + Moon

  • Karaṇa — the half-Tithi that governs effort and action

Together, these two define immunity, health, stability, and the effectiveness of one’s actions.

1. The 27 Nitya Yogas

A Yoga is obtained by adding the longitudes of the Sun and Moon and dividing by 13°20'. There are 27 Yogas, each representing a unique “union” of celestial forces influencing the native’s innate fortune, health, and destiny.

Inauspicious Yogas

The text highlights two Yogas that demand special attention:

Vyatipāta (17th Yoga) and Vaidhṛti (27th Yoga)
— traditionally considered highly malefic
— natives may face sudden calamities, health issues, or downfall
— require Śānti (remedial rituals), especially if the Sun or Jupiter is weak

General Group Results

Yoga Type Specific Yogas General Nature
Auspicious Priti, Saubhāgya, Śobhana, Sukarma, Dhṛti, Vṛddhi, Harṣaṇa, Siddhi, Śiva, Sādhya, Śubha, Śukla, Brahma, Aindra Fortunate, healthy, wealthy, intelligent, well-liked, successful in undertakings.

Destructive Vyatipāta, Vaidhṛti Sudden misfortune, accidents, chronic illness unless well-aspected.

Selected Specific Yogas

  • Viṣkumbha (1st) — Wealthy, capable, victorious, but may have a physical flaw or immoral nature.

  • Āyuṣmān (3rd) — Long-lived, healthy, eloquent speaker.

  • Vajra (15th) — Wealthy but lustful; harsh, forceful personality.

  • Parigha (19th) — Intelligent, skilled in weapons or machinery; many enemies.

These Yogas help refine the assessment of vitality and protection in the native’s life.

2. The 11 Karaṇas (Half-Tithis)

A Karaṇa is half of a Tithi. There are 11 in total:

  • 7 Chara (Movable) Karaṇas — repeat multiple times each month

  • 4 Sthira (Fixed) Karaṇas — occur only once each lunar month

Karaṇas govern daily action, professional aptitude, stability, and success in work.

A. The 7 Chara (Movable) Karaṇas

Generally active, worldly, and dynamic; good for most life activities.

Karaṇa Nature & Results
1. Bava Healthy, happy, dutiful, successful in military or policing.
2. Bālava Handsome, courageous, fond of sports; success in government or leadership.
3. Kaulava Independent, sociable, connected with noble people.
4. Taitila Wealthy, lucky in love, fond of public praise and comforts.
5. Gara Hardworking; skilled in mantra/tantra or agriculture; weak digestion possible.
6. Vāṇija Intelligent, excellent trader/merchant; wealthy.
**7. Viṣṭi (Bhadra) Highly malefic. Cruel, fierce, destructive, unhappy, feared by others. Avoid all auspicious actions during Vishti.

B. The 4 Sthira (Fixed) Karaṇas

These occur only once per month and signify unusual, intense, or karmically heavy destinies.

Karaṇa Nature & Results
8. Śakuni Intelligent, skilled in omens, steady mind; may suffer sickness.
9. Catuṣpada Associated with animals, veterinary work, or rural life; wealthy but simple.
10. Nāga Strong, irritable, forceful; “venomous speech.”
11. Kims̄tugna Virtuous, righteous, humanitarian, lucky in life.

Karaṇa is crucial in assessing karma-niṣṭhā — how effectively a person can act and achieve.

3. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)

Dr. Pulippani provides a powerful interpretive key:

“Vishti Karaṇa (Bhadra) is the poison of the Tithi.
A native born in Vishti may face secret enemies, poisoning, or hidden dangers.
But with a strong Mars, such a person becomes an excellent soldier, spy, or strategist.”

He further summarizes the Five Elements of the Pañcāṅga:

Pañcāṅga Limb Element Meaning
Tithi Water Wealth, prosperity, fluidity
Vara Fire Vitality, physical health
Nakṣatra Air Longevity, prāṇa (breath)
Yoga Ether Immunity, link to spirit
Karaṇa Earth Achievement, work, practicality

“If all five limbs are strong, the native becomes like a king.”
