Chapter 9: Garbhādhāna & Niṣeka Adhyāya
Conception and the Mysteries of the Seed
Having completed the study of the Pañcāṅga—the quality of the moment of birth—the text now steps back to the more subtle and sacred moment that precedes birth: conception (Niṣeka). If the horoscope is the “fruit,” conception is the “seed.” And just as the nature of a seed determines the quality of the fruit, the state of the parents at the moment of conception profoundly influences the child who takes birth.
Nṛsiṁha Daivajña draws from the classical Parāśara and Śārāvalī traditions to outline the astrological, biological, and psychological conditions that govern the descent of the soul.
1. Ṛtu Kāla — The Fertile Window
The chapter begins by describing the ideal time in the woman’s menstrual cycle for conception.
The First Four Days
-
The first four days of menstruation are regarded as a cleansing period.
-
The female body expels Rajas (toxins and impurities).
-
Conception at this time is considered inauspicious, potentially producing a weak or short-lived child.
The Suitable Period (5th to 16th Day)
-
From the 5th to the 16th day after menstruation begins is known as Ṛtu Kāla, the fertile window.
-
This period is ideal for conception and is recommended in all classical texts.
This timing aligns the biological receptivity of the mother with cosmological harmony.
2. Determining Gender — The Rule of Even and Odd Nights
Traditional Jyotiṣa provides guidelines for the gender of the child based on the count of nights from the onset of menstruation.
| Night Count | Result |
|---|---|
| 4th Night | Avoid altogether; may lead to weakness or short life. |
| Even Nights (6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) | Favour conception of a male child. |
| Odd Nights (5, 7, 9, 11, 15) | Favour conception of a female child. |
| Prohibited Nights | New Moon (Amāvasyā), Full Moon (Pūrṇimā), eclipses, and Riktā tithis (4th, 9th, 14th). |
These prohibitions seek to avoid lunar instability or celestial disturbances which may imprint negativity on the fetus.
3. Adhana Lagna — The Ascendant at the Moment of Conception
Although difficult to determine precisely, the text emphasizes the importance of the Niṣeka Lagna, the Ascendant at the moment of conception.
Favourable Conditions
-
If Sun (Father) and Venus (Mother) are strong—placed in their own Navāṁśas or aspected by Jupiter—the conception produces a fortunate, noble child.
-
Benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury) in the Lagna or Kendras at this moment yield a righteous, intelligent offspring.
Unfavourable Conditions
-
Malefics such as Mars, Saturn, or Rahu in the Lagna at the moment of conception may produce a child:
-
prone to illness,
-
causing sorrow to parents, or
-
burdened with karmic challenges.
-
Power to Modify Birth Karma
An important principle is stated:
Strong planets at the moment of conception can mitigate weak planets in the birth chart.
Thus, Niṣeka acts as a subtle blueprint shaping the Janma Kundali.
4. Citta Vṛtti — Mental State of the Parents
The author highlights a powerful psychological law:
The soul attracted at conception resonates with the parents’ thoughts at that time.
Sattvic Conception
-
Loving, peaceful, contented minds
-
Attract a refined, noble, dharmic soul
Rajasic Conception
-
Lustful, passionate, restless minds
-
Attract a worldly, ambitious soul
Tamasic Conception
-
Anger, intoxication, fear, confusion
-
Attract a soul burdened with lower tendencies, disease, or suffering
This teaching bridges ancient psychology with modern epigenetic perspectives.
5. Translator’s Commentary (Dr. U. S. Pulippani)
Dr. Pulippani clarifies several subtle points:
“Modern biology assigns gender through chromosomes, yet time cycles (even/odd nights) influence which chromosome becomes dominant. The ancients observed these patterns empirically.”
He adds:
-
Casting an exact Adhana Chart is rare, since the moment of conception is unknown.
-
Thus, the chapter serves as Muhurta guidance for couples planning pregnancy.
-
Understanding Niṣeka allows astrologers to see why karmas unfold the way they do, connecting the seed to the fruit.
Summary of Chapter 9
-
Abstinence during the first four days of menstruation.
-
5th to 16th days are ideal for conception.
-
Even nights → male, Odd nights → female.
-
Avoid New/Full Moon, eclipses, and Riktā tithis for conception.
-
The Adhana Lagna influences the child’s health and character.
Parents’ mental state at the moment of union shapes the qualities of the soul.
