Chapter 11: Planetary Periods of Rahu & Ketu
"One of the greatest strengths of Vedic astrology is the concept of planetary periods, known as dashas. Maharishi Parāśara, in the Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, calls the Vimshottari system the 'King' of all dashas."

The accuracy of this system is so well-established that 13th-century scholar Śrī Mantreśvara, in his renowned classic Phaladeepika, strongly confirms its reliability. The planetary promises shown in a birth chart manifest during the main (Mahadasha), sub (Antardasha), and sub-sub (Pratyantardasha) periods.

Guidelines for Assessment

Because Rahu and Ketu behave differently from the other planets, their dasha results depend on several systematic factors.

1. House Placement

  • Auspicious: Rahu (3, 6, 11); Ketu (5, 9, 12). If in own/exaltation sign, results improve.
  • Difficult: Rahu (7, 8, 12); Ketu (8, 10, 11). Can cause dissatisfaction or sudden trouble.
  • Mixed: Rahu (1, 2, 4, 9, 10); Ketu (3, 7, 10).

*Nodes close to the Ascendant or Midheaven (within 5°) become powerful.

2. Sign Considerations

  • Rahu Favors: Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius.
  • Ketu Favors: Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces.

*Results are exceptional if the sign lord is also a Kendra (1,4,7,10) or Trikona (1,5,9) lord.

3. Nakshatra (Crucial)

The nodes behave according to the nakshatra lord, often more strongly than the sign.

  • Favorable: Nakshatras of 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 lords; Own or Friend's nakshatras.
  • Unfavorable: Nakshatras of 6, 8, 12 lords; Ketu's nakshatra.
General Principles:
  • Association with Kendra/Trikona lords is Positive. Association with 8th/12th lords is Negative.
  • If Rahu/Ketu dasha is the 3rd, 5th, or 7th from the birth dasha, it may bring challenges.
Rahu & Ketu as Yogakarakas

(Bṛghu Parāśari)

“If Rahu or Ketu occupy a kendra and relate to a trine lord — or if they occupy a trine and relate to a kendra lord — they become yogakarakas.”

“When Rahu or Ketu occupy auspicious houses, they behave like benefic yoga-giving planets even without association with trine or kendra lords.”
