Chapter Six: The Results of the Months (Chandra Masa)

1. Chaitra

१. बह्मचर्यपरो नित्यं वेदाध्ययन तत्परः ।
गुरुदेवद्विजातीनां भवेत् चैत्र समुद्भवः ॥

Brahma-charya-paro nityam veda-adhyayana tatparah.
Guru-deva-dvijaateenaam bhavet chaitra samudbhavah.

Meaning One born in the month of Chaitra will be dedicated to celibacy (or self-discipline), always engaged in the study of Vedas, and devoted to the Guru, Gods, and Brahmins.

2. Vaishakha

२. सर्वलक्षण संयुक्तो दीर्घदर्शी कलानिधिः ।
सात्त्विकश्चिरंजीवी जीवी च वैशाखे जायते नरः ॥

Sarva-lakshana samyukto deergha-darshee kalaa-nidhih.
Saattvikash-chiran-jeevee jeevee cha vaishaakhe jaayate narah.

Meaning One born in the month of Vaishakha will be endowed with all auspicious marks, far-sighted (prudent), a repository of arts, pure in nature (Sattvic), and long-lived.

3. Jyeshtha

३. परदेशरतश्चैव शुभचित्तो धनान्वितः ।
दीर्घायुश्च सुबुद्दिश्च ज्येष्ठमासे नरो भवेत् ॥

Para-desha-ratash-chaiva shubha-chitto dhana-anvitah.
Deergha-aayush-cha subuddhish-cha jyeshtha-maase naro bhavet.

Meaning One born in the month of Jyeshtha will be fond of living in foreign lands, have a pure mind, be wealthy, long-lived, and possess good intelligence.

4. Ashadha

४. पुत्रपौत्त्रान्वितो धर्मो वित्तनाशेन पीड़ितः ।
सुवर्णश्चाऽल्प सुखिनो ह्याषाढे च भवेन्नरः ॥

Putra-pauttra-anvito dharmo vitta-naashena peeditah.
Suvarnash-cha-alpa sukhino hy-aashaadhe cha bhaven-narah.

Meaning One born in the month of Ashadha will be endowed with sons and grandsons and be righteous, but will be distressed by the loss of wealth. He will have a golden/fair complexion but only limited happiness.

5. Shravana

५. सुखेदुःखे तथा हानौ लाभे च समचिन्तकः ।
स्थूलदेह सुरूपश्च श्रावणे जायते नरः ॥

Sukhe-duhkhe tathaa haanau laabhe cha sama-chintakah.
Sthuula-deha suruupash-cha shraavane jaayate narah.

Meaning One born in the month of Shravana will maintain an equal mind in happiness and sorrow, and in loss and gain. He will have a stout body and be handsome.

6. Bhadrapada

६. भोगी दाता कृषो दीर्घा गौरः कामी बहुस्त्रिकः (म्यधिकांगनः) ।
पुत्त्रवान् धनवान् श्रीमान् नरो भाद्रपदे भवेत् ॥

Bhogee daataa krisho deerghaa gaurah kaamee bahu-strikah.
Putravaan dhanavaan shreemaan naro bhaadrapade bhavet.

Meaning One born in the month of Bhadrapada will be an enjoyer of life, charitable, thin, tall, fair-complexioned, lustful, and attached to many women. He will have sons, wealth, and prosperity.

7. Ashvina

७. आश्विने च नरोजातो विद्वान्भूपप्रियो भवेत् ।
बहुभृत्यः स्त्रिया युक्तो बह्वपत्योऽल्पजीवितः ॥

Ashvine cha naro-jaato vidvaan-bhuupa-priyo bhavet.
Bahu-bhrityah striyaa yukto bahv-apatyo-alpa-jeevitah.

Meaning One born in the month of Ashvina will be learned and dear to kings. He will have many servants, be attached to women, have many children, but will be short-lived.

8. Kartika

८. वाचालो बहुबुद्धिश्च कुंचिताग्रालकोऽलसः।
कार्तिके जायते नित्यं ब्रह्मचर्यरतो भवेत् ॥

Vaachaalo bahu-buddhish-cha kunchita-agra-alako-alasah.
Kaartike jaayate nityam brahma-charya-rato bhavet.

Meaning One born in the month of Kartika will be talkative, highly intelligent, have hair with curly tips, and be lazy, yet he will be dedicated to celibacy (or the student life).

9. Margashirsha

९. तीर्थयात्त्रा रतो नित्यं मन्त्रदीक्षा परायणः ।
मार्गमासे (शीर्षे) भवेन्मर्त्यः सदा शास्त्रार्थकोविदः ॥

Teertha-yaatraa rato nityam mantra-deekshaa paraayanah.
Maarga-maase (sheershe) bhaven-martyah sadaa shaastra-artha-kovidah.

Meaning One born in the month of Margashirsha will be fond of pilgrimages, dedicated to Mantra initiation/practice, and always expert in the meaning of scriptures.

10. Pushya (Pausha)

१०. पुष्यमासे समुत्पन्नो नरो दुःखप्रदो भवेत् ।
सर्वरोगयुतो नित्यं पापमार्गरतः खलः ॥

Pushya-maase samutpanno naro duhkha-prado bhavet.
Sarva-roga-yuto nityam paapa-maarga-ratah khalah.

Meaning One born in the month of Pushya (Pausha) may be a source of sorrow, afflicted by all kinds of diseases, constantly engaged in sinful paths, and wicked.

11. Magha

११. योगीश्वरस्तपोनिष्टो वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः ।
शान्तो दयान्वितो दक्षो नरो माखे (माघे) प्रजायते ॥

Yogeeshvaras-tapo-nishto veda-vedaanga-paaragah.
Shaanto dayaanvito daksho naro maakhe (maaghe) prajaayate.

Meaning One born in the month of Magha will be a master Yogi, steadfast in penance, expert in the Vedas and Vedangas, peaceful, compassionate, and capable/skillful.

12. Phalguna

१२. सुकुमारः सदाभोगी कामी स्त्रीवल्लभः सुखी ।
फाल्गुने जायते बालो गजाश्वनरभूषणः ॥

Sukumaarah sadaa-bhogee kaamee stree-vallabhah sukhee.
Phaalgune jaayate baalo gaja-ashva-nara-bhuushanah.

Meaning One born in the month of Phalguna will be delicate/tender, always enjoying pleasures, lustful, beloved of women, happy, and adorned with elephants, horses, and men (servants/followers).

Note on Adhika/Kshaya Masa

क्षयमासेऽधिमासे च तन्मासानां फलं स्मृतम् ।

Kshaya-maase-adhimase cha tan-maasaanaam phalam smritam.

Meaning For births in a decayed month (Kshaya Masa) or an intercalary month (Adhika Masa), the results are said to be the same as those of the respective months (to which they are attached).

Iti Sri-Jataka-Sara-Deepe Maasa-phala-adhyaayah shashthah.
